Interior designer Genevieve Gorder's greatest room design of all time was actually on a houseboat—and she shares upgrades from that project that you can do, too.
Swap out hardware.
"Any kind of kitchen cabinetry, or maybe your bathroom vanity, it could be your desk drawers, it could be a dresser—change out the hardware. It's so simple, it's the jewelry of your room, but look into horn or acrylic. Look into mother of pearl and brass or even leather pulls. You can get these for $30 a piece or $1 a piece depending on where you shop. And these create a custom designer look in two seconds," says Genevieve.
Use smaller area rugs.
"When you're dealing with a small space, it doesn't mean you have to do one big area rug. A successful tip in small spaces is using a lot of little rugs. Now these act as landing pads instead of islands. You can layer these on top of an area rug or just on top of your floor. They allow you to get a little bit more bold with texture and with color—you don't have to be scared because they're just little blips. And just think of them as textiles you layer for decor," she says. Such a clever idea!
